Does Car AC Use Gas?

Air Conditioner Vent
The air conditioning system in your BMW draws electrical energy from the alternator, which is powered by your gas-driven engine. So, does car AC use gas? Yes it does, however in some situations, using the AC can be more efficient than not using it. Learn more about how your car’s air conditioning system works and the role it plays in gas mileage in this guide from the experts from the BMW of Warwick Service Center. If it turns out that you require AC service or repair, schedule an appointment with us today!

How Does Car AC Work?

The air conditioning system in your BMW, and in basically any vehicle, runs on a high-pressure gas called refrigerant. The key components of your car’s AC system include:

  • Compressor – compresses the refrigerant into a fluid, so that it can flow through the feed line to the condenser.
  • Condenser – removes the heat from the refrigerant and pushes it along to the expansion valve.
  • Expansion valve or orifice tube – returns the refrigerant to its original gaseous state and moves it to the receiver/drier or accumulator.
  • Receiver/drier or accumulator – removes moisture from the refrigerant and transfers it to the evaporator.
  • Evaporator – pulls heat from the air passing through its core and transfers it into the refrigerant, resulting in cold air flowing beyond the evaporator.

Can It Be Fuel-Efficient to Use Car AC?

Does air conditioning in the car use gas? Yes, but running the AC while driving on East Greenwich-area highways can be more efficient than leaving the windows open. This is because open windows create an aerodynamic drag, which causes the engine to work harder and burn more fuel.

How to Improve Fuel Economy

Keeping the windows rolled up when you’re out on the highway is only one way to help save gas. Some other ways to improve fuel economy on the roads in and around Providence include:

  • Brake gently and gradually
  • Make sure your car’s tires have the proper amount of tread, are properly inflated, and that the wheels are balanced and aligned
  • Don’t allow the vehicle to idle for more than 30 seconds
  • Use premium oil
  • Reduce your speed and drive in a higher gear
  • Don’t overload the vehicle
  • Keep up to date on all of your scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes
