How Often To Change Synthetic Oil

oil change on a car

Oil changes used to be recommended every 3,000 miles, but with OEM-approved synthetic oil, the latest BMW vehicles can go anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 miles in between visits to our service center. Your Condition Based Service (CBS) monitor will let you know exactly how often to change synthetic oil in your vehicle based on real-world conditions. However, it’s never a bad idea to keep track of your oil change frequency by hand, and certain older models may not offer a CBS system.

That’s why we’ve put together this quick and easy overview of BMW synthetic oil change guidelines.

How Often Do You Change Synthetic Oil?

Where you drive and how you drive has a big impact on how long your oil lasts, so one driver in East Greenwich might need to have theirs changed more frequently than another driver in Providence, even if they have the exact same make and model.

That’s why new BMW models use a Condition Based Service monitor to:

  • Track your oil levels.
  • Assess the quality of your oil.
  • Provide recommendations based on time and mileage.

The CBS won’t just tell you how often you should change your oil. It can provide information on many different service fluids and components. You can use your iDrive® display to view conditions.

Why Choose Synthetic Oil?

Every BMW oil change should be carried out with synthetic oil. Our service team will use BMW SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, the product that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Why is a BMW synthetic oil change needed? Compared against conventional oil, synthetic oil:

  • Lasts Longer: Conventional oil breaks down faster than synthetic oil, so it can’t perform to BMW standards across the full duration of a BMW oil change interval.
  • More Refined: This means it works better at higher temperatures, which is perfect when you’re making the most of a high-performance vehicle.
  • More Protective: Synthetic oil is cleaner, so engine grime and deposits don’t build up nearly as quickly while you’re driving around Warwick and Cranston.
