How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Before we go over how to check car oil, it’s important that you reference your owner’s manual. Many newer BMW models don’t have a traditional dipstick for you to check your oil level. Instead, you might find that you can check the oil level in your car through your vehicle’s infotainment system.

Of course, this can vary so we suggest you check your owner’s manual or visit our team of experts for details. If you’ve got an older BMW model or your owner’s manual states that you have an oil dipstick, here’s how to check the oil level in your car:

  1. Find level ground and park your vehicle.
  2. Ensure your vehicle is off and open your hood.
  3. Locate the oil dipstick.
  4. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe any oil residue off from the end of it.
  5. Put the dipstick back into the tube and pull it back out.
  6. Check the oil level and ensure it’s between the “full” and “empty” indicators.
  7. If the oil level is correct, you can put the dipstick back and drive your vehicle as normal. If you notice the oil level is incorrect or the oil seems burnt or full of debris, be sure to schedule a service appointment immediately.

Can You Reset the Oil Change Light?
