Why is My Car Leaking Water?

Green Car with Puddle

Is your car leaking water? It’s normally nothing too serious. In fact, seeing small puddles of water near the back of the engine compartment is normally condensation from the air conditioning system. Small puddles near the tailpipe are usually just exhaust condensation.

That said, leaking fluids can sometimes be due to more serious issues, which is why we encourage concerned drivers to stop by our Warwick service center for a quick inspection. You can also read on to find more.

Why is Water Leaking from Under Your Car?

If you’re worried that water leaking from under the car is actually something other than water, there are plenty of things you can do. Simply follow these steps to determine the likely cause:

  1. Put a piece of paper under the leak. If the color is different from normal water, it’s probably coolant.
  2. If more than a small puddle comes from your exhaust, you may have a blown gasket. This will also create lots of white smoke that emanates from the exhaust.
  3. Check coolant levels to see if you need a top up at your local certified service center.
  4. Check around the front tires. If you notice light blue or light green fluid, wiper fluid is probably leaking from the windshield wiper fluid reservoir.

If fluids are collecting under your vehicle due to anything other than condensation, you should stop your drive around East Greenwich and schedule service as soon as possible.

How Can You Tell Which Fluid is Leaking?

Providence drivers aren’t always able to tell which fluid is which without a little help. Luckily enough, vehicle fluids are usually colored to help make identification easier. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Red Fluid: Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange Fluid: Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow Fluid: Radiator Coolant
  • Green Fluid: Antifreeze from the Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue Fluid: Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown Fluid: Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown Fluid: Fresher Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink Fluid: Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
