How to Reset Your BMW Service Light | BMW of Warwick

BMW Dashboard

What Is the BMW Service Light and Why Does It Come On?

The BMW service light is part of your vehicle’s built-in maintenance reminder system. It’s designed to let you know when routine services—such as oil changes, brake inspections, or fluid top-offs—are due. While it’s helpful, the light may stay on after service is performed if it’s not reset properly.

At BMW of Warwick, our technicians reset this light automatically after service, but if you’ve done maintenance yourself or the light wasn’t cleared, you can reset it manually.

When Should You Reset the BMW Service Light?

You should only reset the service light after the corresponding maintenance has been completed. Resetting the light without performing the service can result in missed maintenance, which may affect vehicle performance or warranty compliance.

You may need to reset the light if you:

  • Changed the oil or performed basic maintenance yourself.
  • See the light even after service was recently completed.
  • Receive a dashboard message like “Service Due” or “Check Engine Oil Soon.”

How Do You Reset the BMW Service Light?

The process can vary slightly depending on your BMW model, but the general steps are:

  1. Turn on the vehicle’s ignition (but do not start the engine).
  2. Press and hold the Odometer Reset button until the service icon or menu appears on the instrument cluster.
  3. To scroll through the menu, use the BC button (on the turn signal stalk) or steering wheel controls.
  4. Highlight the service you want to reset (e.g., oil, brake, or inspection).
  5. Press and hold the BC button again until “Reset?” appears.
  6. Confirm by holding the button a second time until the screen reads “Reset Successful.”

In newer models, this process may be completed via the iDrive system under the Vehicle Status or Service menu.

Can You Reset the BMW Service Light Using the My BMW App?

In some newer BMW models, the My BMW App may allow you to view and manage your maintenance reminders. However, resetting the service light still requires in-vehicle interaction, either manually or by visiting a certified BMW service center.
