How to Reset the BMW Service Light

BMW Dashboard

The BMW service light’s purpose is to alert you that your vehicle is due for maintenance, and it will display the number of miles or amount of time until your next recommended maintenance service. Once the required service has been completed, you will need to reset the BMW service light. The certified technicians at BMW of Warwick will routinely reset the BMW service light during your maintenance visit, but if you perform maintenance on your own, you’ll need to know how to reset the BMW service light. This guide from our service team will walk you through the steps for resetting the BMW service light. If you’d rather have a professional handle the job for you, schedule an appointment with our Service Center near East Greenwich.

Follow These Steps to Reset the BMW Service Light

The process of how to reset your BMW service light will differ slightly depending on the trim and model year of the specific BMW model you drive. However, the following steps will give you a basic overview:

  1. Turn on the vehicle’s electrical systems but do not start the engine. If your BMW is equipped with a push-button start, you may have to push the ignition three times in a row, although on some models you will only have to push it once. Your owner’s manual will have specifics for your BMW model.
  2. Press and hold the small odometer button near the bottom left corner of the instrument panel until the service message appears.
  3. Release the button, and press and hold it again until the message says “Reset?”.
  4. Release the button again, and press and hold it. The message will say, “Reset in Progress”. Continue to press and hold the button until the message says, “Reset Successful.”
  5. Turn the car off and then start it to make sure the light was successfully reset.

BMW Service Lights vs. Dashboard Warning Lights

As noted above, the BMW service light’s primary function is to let you know when it’s time for regular maintenance based on the number of miles and amount of time since the last scheduled service was performed.

The dashboard warning lights are activated when a specific vehicle issue is detected, regardless of the number of miles or time since the last service.

Whether the BMW service light or one of the dashboard warning lights is illuminated, it is very important that you address the issue as soon as possible.

How to Reset Dashboard Warning Lights on BMW Models

The process for resetting the dashboard warning lights are basically the same as that used to reset the BMW service light. However, as you’ll see below, there is a small difference:

  1. Follow steps 1 through 3 from the instructions above.
  2. Release the odometer button after the service message comes on.
  3. Press the button (without holding it down) until the menu comes to the warning light that you want to reset, whether that be the brake fluid light, oil service light, or any other warning light.
  4. Follow steps 4 and 5 from the instructions above, and repeat until all relevant warning lights have been successfully reset.
  5. Turn the car off and then start it to make sure all relevant lights have been reset.

As with the BMW service light, the dashboard warning lights should only be turned off or reset when you are certain that the issue has been taken care of. Ignoring the dashboard lights can lead to serious problems and costly repairs.
