How to Program Your BMW Key Fob

BMW Key Case

Whether you’re a car whiz or a total novice, learning how to program your BMW key is a simple skill that any East Greenwich driver can master in minutes. Before you begin, there are two basic methods to keep in mind. The first method is used to program multiple, additional keys with a working BMW key fob. The second method involves programming your key from scratch without a working BMW key fob. Let’s take a look at both methods below.

BMW Key Fob Programming: Adding Multiple Keys

When you have one working BMW key fob, you can program additional keys easily from your Providence garage. Feel free to order additional key fobs from our parts department and then follow these steps:

  1. Grab your working key and all of the additional keys that you want to program. Sit inside the car with all the windows and doors closed.
  2. Place the working key in the ignition and turn it to position 1. This means you will turn the key, but not start the engine. Your dash lights and accessories will turn on.
  3. Remove the key.
  4. Take your working key and hold down the unlock button continuously. Press the lock button 3 times while keeping the unlock button held down, then release both buttons. The doors will lock and unlock.
  5. Repeat this process on each new BMW key fob that you want to program. When the doors lock and unlock, you’ll know that the process is complete.

If you don’t feel like becoming a BMW key fob programmer at home, just schedule service and let our team take care of everything.

BMW Key Fob Programming: Creating a New Key

If you’re programming a BMW key fob replacement without a working key, the programming method is very similar. Here are your instructions:

  1. Using your new BMW key fob replacement, insert the key into the ignition.
  2. Turn your key to position 1 and back. Repeat 5 times quickly.
  3. Remove the key.
  4. Hold down the unlock button continuously. Press the lock button 3 times, then release both buttons.
  5. You can also program additional keys at this time by repeating step 4. Be sure to complete this step for each new key within 30 seconds of the last key’s programming.
  6. Turn on the ignition to complete the process.
