If you’re searching for exceptional luxury in a smaller crossover SUV, the BMW X1 and the X3 require a closer look. The subcompact X1 is unchanged for the 2026 model year, while the compact X3 introduces a few minor updates. What should you expect from these elite crossovers?
Performance
The entry-level trim for the X1 is the xDrive28i. It has a turbo 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and generates 241 horsepower. The M35i features an upgraded, 312-horsepower version of this engine. Both pairs have a seven-speed dual-clutch auto transmission. The M35i is also engineered with adaptive suspension dampers.
The X3’s base trim level, the 30 xDrive, has a 255-horsepower turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The M50 xDrive has a 393-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. Both are offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M50 xDrive has mechanical upgrades like adaptive sport suspension, upgraded brakes, and variable sport steering.
Appearance
The smaller X1 has a graceful presence, with a slow taper through the roof and exquisite contouring running across the door panels. At the front, the BMW kidney-style grille is compact and mounted above a small, upturned grille. Flanking the grille, large L-shaped air vents are set back for an athletic look. The angled headlights show off a pair of bent LED bars.
The X3 has a more upright stance and a squared-off hood. The sides display a crisp crease running at an angle below the door panel definition. The two-part grille is outlined in chrome and has sharp corners. The headlights are smaller than the X1’s and have a pair of bent LED accent lights. The uniquely shaped bumper is sectioned in two parts and sits between large, vertical air inlets.
Features
The X1’s features include heated seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, a 10.7-inch touch display screen, configurable cabin lights, a navigation system, a wireless charging pad, a drive recorder, a 360-degree camera, automated parking assistance, a head-up display, a Harman Kardon sound system, a wireless charging pad and numerous additional features.
The X3 has the following features: Merino leather upholstery, rear climate controls, a hands-free driving system, remote engine start, a 14.9-inch touch display screen, and several others.
